The future of Ousmane Dembele has been a hot topic in Barcelona this year. After being branded as one of the biggest flops in the club’s history, a stunning turnaround saw him become the most important asset to Xavi’s attacking unit in the space of two months.
Barcelona have since looked to convince Dembele to extend his current contract that expires at the end of June. The player is determined to remain at the club but his lofty wage demands, combined with equally staggering commission fees have put a halt to any progress.
Barcelona have submitted their final offer for renewal. But it does not satisfy Dembele and his agent, although they are yet to provide an official response to the offer.
At the same time, Dembele’s prospects of moving to other European giants such as Chelsea or PSG are slowly starting to diminish.
PSG have reportedly pulled the plug on the pursuit of the winger, whereas the player is yet to agree personal terms with Chelsea. His priority is to remain in Barcelona.
Spanish journalist Santi Oval (h/t FCB World) reveals Dembele has recently spoken to Xavi over his future. During the discussion, the player has insisted he wants to remain at Camp Nou and continue his progress under the Barcelona coach.
However, Xavi has asked Dembele to make an effort, if he wishes to remain at the club, and accept Barça’s final proposal. The coach had also asked the board to improve their final offer, in an attempt to keep the Frenchman in Catalunya beyond the summer.
With a little more than a week remaining until Dembele’s contract comes to an end, time is running out for both parties, and it will be interesting to see whether they can reach a late agreement over the coming days.
