Liverpool reportedly tried to sign £86m man this summer, he’d be a better signing than Bellingham – RTK View

Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde would be a better signing for Liverpool than rumoured top target Jude Bellingham.

Liverpool reportedly attempted a last-minute raid for Valverde in this summer’s transfer window. According to AS, the Reds made an audacious £86m bid for the Uruguayan.

Whether that’s true or not is very much up for debate. Regardless though, Liverpool should have the 24-year-old’s name in mind if there’s even a slight chance he could be available.

His form this season for Madrid has been absolutely magical. Three goals in his last three games and four in eight for the season. That’s the kind of form which marks you out as something special.

Valverde the perfect fit for Liverpool
Looking at goals for a prospective Liverpool midfield signing isn’t necessarily super relevant. When you think of a Jurgen Klopp midfield you don’t think of goals, you think of relentless running.

Well, that’s exactly what Valverde does, with added goals on top. The Madrid man is one of the best athletes in the modern game, charging about the pitch with purpose.

As good as Bellingham is, this isn’t what he’s best known for. Of course, there’s more to a midfield than simply sprinting around. This is a Liverpool team that employ Thiago Alcantara after all.

But Valverde is one of the best players about at doing a bit of everything. He can also fill in on the wing if necessary, such is his footballing intelligence. With all the will in the world, that’s not something you can see Bellingham doing.

Price wise, Valverde could also offer Liverpool a decent saving. As per The Athletic, Borussia Dortmund could be looking for as much as £130m for Bellingham next summer.

If rumours are to be believed, then Liverpool’s bid to Madrid for Valverde was far lower than that. Yes, that was reportedly rejected but regardless, he’d surely cost less than the Englishman.

With Real Madrid also one of those in the running for Bellingham, perhaps they’ll need to free up space in their squad. They do already boast Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga as top young options. Should they land Bellingham too, that feels like perhaps one too many.

As one of their top performers this season, it feels unlikely that Los Blancos would let Valverde go. But as the race for Bellingham gets ever hotter, Liverpool might be wise to at least test their resolve once again.
